Ancient monumental cemetery of Selargius

Crossing the gate immediately you perceive that is the most ancient part of the cemetery: among elegant cypress trees and cobbled paths the tombs alternate between graceful marble sculptures and bronze statues, the oldest dating back to the mid-19th century.

Recognised as a Monumental Site since 2008, the Selargius cemetery is enclosed within high walls and in its oldest part houses funerary works of considerable artistic value, some signed by the famous italian sculptor Giuseppe Maria Sartorio, attesting the importance of the town and the families that have inhabited it over time.

The history of the cemetery is told well from its large forged-iron gate and the pillars supporting it decorated with Doric-style double pilasters.

In the approximately 10-stage itinerary among grave stones, intriguing symbolism and sculptures, I will introduce you to the trends and fascinating artistic works that have come to Selargius over time to celebrate the loss of its inhabitants from the youngest to those with the most important roles in local society.

The first dedicated and specific art-historical study and publication on the subject dates back to 2021 by art historian Melania Garau. The tour is the result of this recent research and the desire to enhance and make known a place that is still little known from the point of view of cemetery discoveries but very important for the town.
