Carbonia: between mines and rationalist architecture

Carbonia was born as a foundation town between 1936 and 1938, a planned town at a short distance from the mining deposits to be exploited in order to bring about a modern economy that would give the many inhabitants and working settlers a better standard of living and guarantee a future for their families.

Serbariu, the suburb from which the Grande Miniera takes its name, and Sirai are the oldest inhabited areas in the area whose history and origins we will learn about, and then concentrate on a guided tour of the town centre where the most evident and fascinating traces of rationalist architecture can be found. A functional and linear architecture that makes the organisation of urban spaces clean and well-ordered and above all unmistakable.

Strolling through the streets of the centre we will identify all the original spaces of the originally founded city, the buildings with their history and function, admiring in the various stages how much that architecture is still intact today, almost as if time had stood still.

The itinerary lasts approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes and includes:
entrance ticket to the Great Coal Museum of Serbariu and guided tour of the town.

The difficulty of the itinerary is medium-low considering a few steps and slight inclines.
However, comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended.

Groups are deliberately reduced to make the experience exclusive, ensuring the quality of the experience and the safety of all participants.

The tour takes place between indoor and outdoor environments where safe distances can be maintained.
